Welcome to Early Start Africa

A continent where all children have an early access to quality care and education.

Early Start Africa was birthed out of an overwhelming desire to see every child provided with the right combination of services and programs for optimal development in Kenya and the entire African continent. Science has now authoritatively revealed that conception through preschool is the first optimal period for human development. During this period, humans are capable of learning and developing rapidly; we develop our senses, our motor skills, identify our group, develop our language and social behaviors. By age six, the brain is already about 90% of its adult size. It stands to reason, then, that quality of care and preschool experiences during these formative years would have a significant life-long effect for children, and benefit society as a whole.

Quality Service

What is one of the best ways a country can boost shared prosperity, promote inclusive economic growth, expand equitable opportunity, and end extreme poverty? The answer is simple: Invest in early childhood development.

Specific Objects

Caring for all Africa's Children's Needs

Our Specific Objectives

Early Start Africa commits to ensure equitable access to quality early childhood care and education for every child as a right regardless of their social, cultural, and economic status. We do so by

-Providing comprehensive early childhood education scholarships to children from needy backgrounds and helping to place them in approved quality public pre-primary education programs within their communities. We work with multi – sectoral teams to identify children who would otherwise not be in school without support. This fund aids with purchase of school uniforms, selected pre-requisite learning materials and ensuring that children have a nutritious meal.

-Promoting timely transition from home to school in partnership with parents and relevant government agencies. We work with public administration, opinion leaders, religious institutions, and parents to build capacity of the community, to mobilize and support children to start school by age 4 or as soon as possible for children older than age four who haven’t started school.

-Promote and support inclusive education for children with special needs and disabilities including supporting early screening and detection. Early Start Africa works in collaboration with key stakeholders to support enrollment of children with special needs and those with disabilities.

-Providing parenting support and relevant frontline ECD workforce mentorship and capacity enhancement

-Partnership with government and non-state actors to enhance regulatory environment for the provision of quality early childhood care and education.

Coverage

Where we are

Early Start Africa is prioritizing urgent support to children from selected urban slums and rural poor in East Africa. Choice of priority focus is and be based on available and ongoing research. Early Start Africa actively engages government and civil society in identification of demographics with greatest return on investment given the resource constraints.

We are currently implementing early childhood care and learning support programs in urban settlements in Nairobi, Nakuru, Kajiado, Kiambu, Marsabit and Trans Nzoia counties of Kenya. Current rural program areas under consideration include Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, selected counties in Western Kenya, Kwale and Kilifi.

Testimonials From Beneficiaries

  • My greatest strength in the sponsorship journey came from ``a small act’’ as it made me work so hard to be the change I want in the society.
  • I would like to tell my sponsors that your assistance has seen me through a great ordeal and I have made a big step in my life. You have instilled in me the spirit of giving back to the society and I hope that you continue helping the needy in the society to get education. May God Bless you all.
  • My suggestion on areas of improvement that Early Start Africa needs to work on is organizing a mentorship programme to bring all the beneficiaries together to meet and share their experiences.
